VOLUNTEER
With our 25 th anniversary just around the corner, our workload has doubled here at LHS. We are planning a year of terrific programs, activities and great new ideas. But, we need more volunteers from the community to make the year a success!
If you are interested in Larchmont history and have thought about getting involved with the Historical Society, NOW is the time to join in. And any commitment level is welcome. We’re not expecting full time help, just whatever you have to offer.
The following is a list of our immediate needs. We’ve tried to be descriptive, but if you have questions, we are happy to discuss them with you. Keep in mind that any commitment level is welcome! Even volunteering for administrative work in the Archives for a few hours or to do a research project will help us tremendously.
When you find a project that captures your interest and enthusiasm, please let us know!

CURRENT VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
Cemetery Restoration: This project was started and seems to have taken a hiatus, so it would be easy to pick up the ball and start running with it. We have some potential funding lined up and need to look into available grants and pursue our contacts for cemetery restoration procedures/resources, too. We plan to start with the Post Road Quaker cemetery and expand from there. The mausoleum needs restoration and it will be a fun and interesting project. We’re looking for a mix of professional experience, interested residents, history buffs and student volunteers.
Newsletter:
Design/Layout: We need someone with graphic design experience to volunteer to create a new template/new look for our newsletter. Great creative opportunity. Hoping to tie in the look of our website. We have a folder of examples and are open to fresh ideas.
Monthly Editor: Looking for one or two people to act as newsletter editor once a new template is in place. Would be responsible for receiving articles, columns from Board Members and editing a monthly newsletter and getting it to the printer. Editing skills a plus. Room for creative input here, too.
Special Events/25 th Anniversary Committee: Plans for some new special events and activities that celebrate LHS’s 25 th anniversary will require several volunteers. Seeking good logistical, organizational skills, creative talent, energy and of course, enthusiasm. Great fun to be had by all!
Video/Film Production: Document personal testimonials and events for traditional and online archives.
Research: Help us document Larchmont’s History! New fascinating leads come into the Archives constantly. Even more so that we’ve opened our website to the world! Do you love research projects? Then volunteer to take on one of these interesting projects from our Archivist. She will direct you with what we have on file and get you going in the right direction.
Website Development: Help us document Larchmont’s History Online! Story ideas and informational pieces are waiting to be put on our website. We need help annotating our online photo database, as well. Great project for residents who have lived in Larchmont for a long time and might be able to help identify people/places/events.
Fundraising
Grant Research: W e know there is public/private funding out there that would assist with our expansion plans and current programs however, we need someone to take the folder of information, make calls, summarize grant information/deadlines, etc. Research and organizational skills a plus!
Grant Writing: Once we identify the appropriate grants and funding opportunities, we need someone to write up the applications. Grant writing experience would be really helpful, but not necessary if you’re willing to help!
Sponsorship: Working with area and other businesses to heighten involvement with ongoing events/programs
Capital Campaign: Looking for someone to spearhead a plan to start fundraising for a new LHS museum, office & archive space.
Community Outreach/Education:
War Memorials Community Education Program: Directly working with local groups/veterans associations/schools and LHS to assist in the creation of a public awareness campaign to educate the residents and students in our community about the War Memorials.
Exhibits: Develop and present traveling trunk exhibits to local schools. Display temporary exhibits - identify available retail space in town and develop the exhibit with our archivist
Membership Development: Seeking one or two people to work with other community organizations to increase membership. Develop and oversee printing of any additional membership materials (solicitation, welcome packets, etc.)
Publications/Printed Materials: Much of our completed research would make wonderful informational pamphlets, etc. to have available in our Archives, use in teaching school children, community groups. Good writers should apply to take on one of these interesting projects.
Publicity: Need assistance with publicizing LHS events, programs, etc. Especially with the 25 th Anniversary. Not a huge time commitment and new ideas are welcome!
Monthly Programs - Lectures, Walking Tours, Re-enactments: You name it; we’re looking for more ideas to interest the community and teach Larchmont history. We have a program director that needs a few assistants!
Century Homes Club: Overseeing membership programs for newly launched club for 100+ yr. old homes in Larchmont. Involves reviewing applications, publicity (ceremonial plaque installation on homes) creating printed materials and special events for club members.
House Tour Committee: The 2006 Tour planning starts in September,
